What are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a prosthetic cap for teeth to protect against weakening, decay, and damage. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials including porcelain, composite resin, and metal alloys.
Dental crowns are ideal for patients who have moderate to severe damage to the superficial outer layer of the teeth, but still have healthy roots, gums, and surrounding teeth. The crown is attached to the existing tooth to prevent any further damage and to give the patient the same functionality as a natural and healthy tooth.
Crowns are a popular and preferred option because they allow the client to keep their natural teeth and are applied in a much less invasive manner compared to other options, such as dental implants or dentures.
Crowns may also be used following procedures that remove the outer layer of the teeth, such as with root canal therapy.
How are Dental Crowns Applied?
Dental crowns are made by first taking an impression of the patient’s teeth from which the prosthetic can be made to match the natural shape and size of the other healthy teeth surrounding the damaged one. Typically, the damaged tooth will need to be filed down to some degree for the crown to fit properly.
After successfully creating an impression to be sent off to the lab, a custom cap is made that is then attached via an adhesive substance.
